Xavier Lands Sixth Commitment in 2014

Xavier filled its final open scholarship with the commitment of 2014 PG Larry Austin on Saturday.

Xavier already had the highest-rated class in school history locked up for 2014, but on Saturday the Musketeers added more quality depth.

Chris Mack's staff received a commitment from three-star Illinois point guard Larry Austin. Another one of Mack's 2014 commitments, Trevon Bluiett, was the first person to break the news on Twitter, but it was later confirmed by Austin's father as well as sources close to the program.

Austin, who had originally committed to Cuonzo Martin at Tennessee but was released from his letter of intent in April after Martin took the California job, averaged 22.2 points, 7.5 rebounds and 4.2 steals last season at Lanphier High School. He chose Xavier over Martin's new home on the West coast the second time around.

The Musketeers had a scholarship open up when Semaj Christon declared for the draft and then Justin Martin decided to exercise the fifth-year graduate transfer option.

Ranked as the 29th point guard in the 2014 class, the 6-2 floor general is a hard-nosed defender with athleticism and length. He excels in transition, and should be able to help X play at a faster pace with his ball pressure and attacking style.

Austin joins a class that includes four-star wings Trevon Bluiett and J.P. Macura, four-star combo guard Edmond Sumner, four-star forward Makinde London and three-star center Sean O'Mara. The class was ranked 14th in Scout's 2014 team rankings before Austin's commitment.

The Musketeers were searching hard for a pure point guard in a thin 2015 class to groom after the graduation of Dee Davis, but ultimately found their man when Austin got his release.
