Xavier athletic director Mike Bobinski is leaving to take the same job at Georgia Tech, according to sources around the program.

After 12 years as the Director of Athletics at Xavier, it looks like Mike Bobinski is leaving.

Bobinski met with Xavier officials on Tuesday, according to a source with direct knowledge of the situation, and informed them that he would be leaving to accept the same position at Georgia Tech. Georgia Tech is a member of the ACC currently, and most importantly for Bobinski's sake they have a football program. Sources informed MusketeerReport of the news Tuesday afternoon, and it was later confirmed the same evening.

Bobinski's move didn't come without plenty of writing on the wall. The Notre Dame graduate has been a candidate for numerous AD job openings over the last few years, including being a finalist for the Boston College job back in October and the TCU job dating back to October of 2009. He was also mentioned in the Arizona and Illinois AD searches, among some others. The buzz for a longtime has been that Bobinski would need to get a job at a school with a football program and prove himself there, before being considered for some of the big-time jobs.

Bobinski's tenure as athletic director saw some of the greatest successes in Xavier sports history. Nine Xavier teams earned 40 team or individual spots in NCAA Championship competition, including the baseball, men's basketball, women's basketball, men's golf, rifle, men's tennis, men's and women's soccer and women's volleyball teams during Bobinski's time as AD. In addition, Xavier has sent individual standouts to NCAA Championship competition in track and field. In the same time span, Xavier teams have captured 25 Atlantic 10 Conference Championships.

The basketball program specifically enjoyed great success over the 12-year span of Bobinski's career at X. The mens basketball team averaged 25 wins per season, while making at least the NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 in four out of the last five years. The Musketeers also reached the Elite Eight in 2004 and 2008.

Bobinski came to Xavier in 1998 as Athletic Director and served in that position until moving to the development office in June of 2004. As associate vice president for development from 2004-06, Bobinski oversaw all fund-raising efforts for Xavier including annual and planned giving, major gifts, grant services and internal operations. Bobinski returned to athletics in 2006.

In 2009, Bobinski hired Chris Mack as men's basketball head coach. He also hired Thad Matta as head men's basketball coach in 2001 and Sean Miller as Xavier's first associate head coach. Matta is now head coach at Ohio State and Miller has since taken over as head coach at Arizona. Bobinski also hired former women's basketball coach Kevin McGuff, who spent nine years at Xavier before leaving for Washington. He also oversaw the opening of Cintas Center.

Ironically, Bobinski will now be the boss of current mens, and former Dayton mens, head basketball coach Brian Gregory.

An official announcement from the university is expected soon.
