Early on, the Orange traded the lead back and forth with the Owls, but held onto the advantage from a little over the 16th minute on.
Despite being ahead, Syracuse allowed Temple's leading scorer, senior guard Khalif Wyatt, 20 points in the first half, as the Owls soared back to within two at the break, 40-38.
To open the second half, Temple wasted no time to take the advantage from Syracuse, scoring first and then following to take the lead, 42-40, less than two minutes in.
The Owls extended their lead to as much as nine points, 51-42, with 15:25 to play.
Although the Orange tied the game four times by the middle of the second half, at 53-, 55-, 57-, and 59-all, the Owls did not allow the Orange to take the lead.
As the game edged closer and closer to completion, no matter what Syracuse did right on offense, they faltered defensively.
After winning a close game at the foul line against Detroit, Syracuse lost the game versus Temple, ironically, from superior shooting at the foul line. The Owls made 29 of their 36 attempts from the charity stripe.
Leading scorer, Wyatt, made all 15 of his tries from the line en route to a 33-point performance, aiding the Owls over the Orange for Syracuse's first loss of the season, 83-79.
Syracuse is now 10-1 for the season and 2-1 in the Chevrolet Gotham Classic.
